The Next Generation of Surface-to-Air Anti-Missile Systems

FSAF
Famille des systèmes Surface-Air Futurs – Famiglia dei sistemi Superficie-Aria Futuri. On the 26th October 1988, French and Italian Defence Ministers signed the Memorandum of Understanding of a bilateral cooperation for the development of a surface to air anti missile system family – FSAF.

The phases 1 and 2 of the Programme – the definition, development and industrialization of SAAM/IT, SAAM/FR and SAMP/T – are currently ongoing: this includes the delivery of some pre-series systems.

The production and support phase of the systems (phase 3) has also been launched at the end of 2003.

PAAMS Munitions
Principal Anti Air Missile Systems are new weapon systems based on common elements developed in the frame of the FSAF programme. It is intended to provide "self defence", "local area" and "naval areal" defence capabilities for the future defence frigates of the navies: the FR/IT Horizon frigate and the UK

Type 45 destroyer. OCCAR will manage the munition procurement for the systems on behalf of the participant nations to achieve better economies of scale.
